Why does skin age?

Aging skin and wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes, collagen depletion, hormone loss and damage caused by free radicals. Those vertical lines that appear between your brows – the “elevens” – result from muscle contractions.

When you concentrate, squint and frown, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. After years of frequent contraction, those wrinkles can linger even after the muscles are at rest.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic and how does it work?

BOTOX® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles to temporarily improve the look of the “elevens” (the moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows). It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles, which reduces muscle activity that causes the persistent lines to form between the brows.

What can I expect from Botox treatment?

Your Water’s Edge Dermatology practitioner will ask you about your areas of concern and your goals to determine the areas on your face to administer BOTOX®. To do this, the provider may examine your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. The location, size and use of the muscles that create furrows between your brows varies among individuals.

Your Water’s Edge Dermatology provider then administers a few tiny injections of BOTOX® directly into the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injection, your Water’s Edge Dermatology practitioner may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes about 10-15 minutes. There is no downtime after the procedure, so you can continue with your day after you leave our office.

Any associated side effects are typically mild and may include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, bleeding and/or bruising.

When will I see results and how long will they last?

You may see improvement within days. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to four months. Your results may vary. Be sure to talk to your Water’s Edge Dermatology provider about what to expect and when to schedule your next appointment.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Although the results are visible, treatment with BOTOX® does not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is reduced temporarily. So you can still frown or look surprised just without the wrinkles and creases between your brows!
